What does it mean to adopt an animal from research? It means giving an animal the greatest gift of all… the chance to live out the course of their natural life in freedom, comfort and safety. It really is a win-win for everyone!
Our animals from research have been living in people’s homes since 2017 and have proven how well they can transition from a life in research to a different life in the community as someone’s cherished companion.
We have many animals available for adoption and you can read more about them here.

Here are the steps involved in adopting an animal from Liberty Foundation:
STEP ONE
Complete our expression of interest to adopt at any time.
At the same time you might want to book an appointment to meet some of our animals at the Liberty Adoption Centre at Wyong on the Central Coast of NSW (less than an hour north of Sydney).
STEP TWO
Someone from Liberty Foundation will contact you via text to make a time to discuss adoption and what animals would best suit your home environment.
Please be patient, this may take a week or two depending on the volume of applications we have at any time. We rely on volunteers to keep our service running and appreciate your understanding.
STEP THREE
After the initial screening, if you want to proceed with adoption you need to set up the accommodation for your intended adoptee at your home. Here are some helpful guides to setting up housing:
Guidelines for piggie housing – for guinea pigs
Creating the ultimate rat pad – for rats
Build a first-rate mouse house – for mice
Once your accommodation set-up is complete, just get in touch with us and we’ll arrange a video call or you can send videos or images of the housing.
STEP FOUR
When your accommodation set-up is approved, we send you an adoption form which can be completed online.
At this time you send the adoption fee to Liberty Foundation as a direct deposit in our bank account.
STEP FIVE
We make a time for you to collect your new pet/s from the Liberty Adoption Centre at Wyong or we make arrangements to deliver the animals to you!
We can organise transport for animals to Queensland, Victoria and the ACT as well as regional areas of NSW. Depending on the location, the adopter may be requested to cover some of the transport costs.
We rely on the kindness and generosity of people in the community to keep our service running and provide as many animals as possible, the opportunity to leave a research facility.
We look forward to hearing from you!
